Are You Closer to God or Facebook?

Are You Closer to God or Facebook: 7 Questions to Ask Yourself. (And How You Can Get Closer to God)

The questions posed here are meant to promote spiritual growth, encourage self improvement, assist Christians in balancing their time, and challenging themselves to be honest in their spiritual priorities. See if any of these things make you stop and think. Ask yourself if you’re more familiar with, and closer to God or Facebook?

  • What if I asked you if you knew the complete names of 10 people off the top of your head, who are on your Facebook? Do you know of 10 different names of God?
  • Can you think of 5 most recent statuses that you saw on Facebook this week? Can you think of 5 most recent scriptures you read?
  • Can you name 10 people from your high school? Can you name 10 people from the Old Testament?
  • When was the last time you spent at least a half an hour straight on Facebook? Can you remember the last time you spent a half hour reading the bible?
  • What is the longest time in the last month in one sitting, that you’ve gone on Facebook? What is the longest time in the last month in one sitting that you’ve spent in the bible or spiritual reading?
  • When was the last time you spent reading every comment under a status, one by one? When was the last time you read the entire chapter of Galatians? Matthew? John?
  • Can you think of at least 12 photos you’ve seen on Facebook? Can you name the 12 Apostles?

If any of these 7 questions have made you stop and think that you’ve put more time into Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or other social networking sites than you have into the Lord, it may be time to step back and reassess what Facebook time has really done for your heart, versus what God can do for your heart? Do you think you’d like to begin minimizing your time on your Facebook addiction and be closer to God?

Mark 4:19 but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.

I am an avid daily Facebooker. I run a group of over 450 people, have two accounts, run business & promotion pages, and have a total accumulation of over 1500 Facebook people who I am connected to. Add to that 2 channels on Youtube, and other internet business, and one could say I spend a tremendous amount of time on the computer. I have likely spent more hours on the internet than you have. When I realized that I actually had a Facebook addiction, I saw that I needed to put God as more of a central focus in my life. I now divide my time between work, Christian writing, bible research, prayer, and bible study. Am I tooting my own horn? Not at all. It took me a long time to come to the realization that it is actually ok if I don’t know every single thing going on on social media. God needs my time. And I need His. I needed spiritual growth, Christian self help, and I needed to get closer to God.

Get Closer to God

If you want to make a commitment to give God more of your time and devotion, then the best way to go about it is implementing the following suggestions into a new routine to maximize and advance in your spiritual growth:

  • Incorporate at least 30 min of bible study daily in order to be closer to Jesus.
  • Listen to a bible app for at least 15 min daily.
  • Pray 2 or 3 more times than you are currently praying, and stick to it. Leave reminders for yourself to take time to pray.
  • Pray that the Lord remove the desire to put other things which are unimportant, and replace it with the desire to better serve Him and give Him your gratitude and praise.
  • Change your password to a scripture, to remind you that you must limit your Facebook or social media to a certain amount of time. This time, whenever you log in, and type in your password, you’ll have a reminder. Do this now.
  • Remove the Facebook app off your phone and replace it with a Bible App, such as Bible Gateway, open it and listen to bible reading on your way to work.
